FAQ
Technology & Features
You have three options.
First, you can include your own citation notes. The AI will include these citations and structure them into a draft for you.
Second, you can upload the source PDF file and our AI will analyze it, find relevant sources, and include them in the draft.
Third, you can use both options! Include your own notes and have our AI find more citations.
We use a blend of different technologies and AI models for the best results. For example, our primary compositional model uses the large 128K context window of GPT-4 to deliver the most relevant, precise, and accurate results. We use computer science to manage multiple processing thread workers to get your results quickly and keep prices as affordable as possible. Further, we use natural language processing tools to analyze, refine, and polish the output so the quality is higher than you might get from vanilla ChatGPT.
AI Source Writer is crafted to generate drafts that serve as a substantial starting point for your writing. While it significantly aids in drafting, the tool is designed to augment rather than replace your writing efforts. It enables users to experiment with various drafts, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding and iteration of content. Our focus is to go from research to draft completion as quickly as possible, so you can iterate on more drafts, using each to get deeper insight into your topic, and have more time to polish your final composition.
We do this by specifically constraining the generative AI to your source material and topic. While manual use of ChatGPT or the OpenAI API might yield similar results, our tool fully automates and refines this process. Allowing you to spend your time and effort where it really matters.
Furthermore, even if you have the skill to utilize the OpenAI API, we spend a lot of time refining our complex system to deliver you incredible results. We utilize multiple different natural language processing technologies various different dialogues with multiple AI systems that you may or may not have access to.
If cost is a concern, a significant portion of the subscription cost goes into running these systems. You wouldn't save very much money by doing things manually. Even though you may eventually be able to get similar results using ChatGPT Plus at $20/month, it would require extensive back and forth dialogue and manual context management to get remotely similar results to what we can provide to you in just about a minute.
That being said, if you are inclined, we would encourage you to try everything! Usage & Best Practices
As writers, we have found that the best versions of our papers are usually the at-least the 3rd or 4th versions. So, we created AI Source Writer to help complete more drafts faster. Now, we can do more iterations on the assignment, and cover more analysis and synthesis, and ultimately provide more content and context to compose, cut, and polish for a better final result.
We would suggest reading some sources that you like, taking notes, then using those notes and your sources to generate a draft. Then, you can read that draft and try to understand how it all works together. You can cut sections you don't like, and you can add subsections/subtopics you would like to include. You can use the section generator to write these sections quickly (coming soon). With the insight from this first rough draft, you can search our more sources, or remove sources that you don't think contribute properly.
Furthermore, we would recommend having some idea of what you hope to see with your draft. The goal should be – you see what you want to write, but instead of having to manually do the writing, you can use Source Writer as a “multi-paragraph” auto complete. However, this is still a huge time saver. Manually writing out the content of a draft takes a few hours of focused work per draft. By using AI Source Writer, you can save those hours and spend them reading more sources, understanding the content deeper, strengthening your article, exploratory writing more drafts, and polishing your final.
For the best results, the sources you use should be related or have some synergy. They should also be cut down so they are not too long (30-50 pages is okay). For example, using the relevant chapters from your textbook instead of the entire textbook will provide better results.
The time saved can vary significantly based on the assignment's complexity and length, to what extent the tool is used in exploratory writing, and simply how many writing assignments or discussion posts you have. Users can potentially save 1-3+ hours per page, translating to saving a significant 3 to 12+ hours a week and even 12 to 50+ hours a month. We've noticed a large portion of time savings coming from reducing procrastination; since it is easier to refine, edit, and expand than it is to start from scratch. In any case, there will be more time for you to use and re-invest in enhancing the quality of work or for other academic activities.
Academic Integrity & Impact
Beyond just assisting with writing, AI Source Writer is intended to be a part of your learning journey. By streamlining the drafting process, it allows you more time to focus on critical thinking, analysis, and engagement with your subjects. The tool is designed to enhance your understanding of topics, improve research skills, and foster a deeper commitment to academic excellence.
AI Source Writer is built with academic integrity at its core. It assists in generating drafts and cites your sources properly, but it is up to you to contribute your original thoughts and create a good final composition. The tool is designed to enhance the research and writing process, helping you iterate quickly over multiple versions of your draft. Allowing you to have more time to engage more deeply with the topics and sources, allowing you to increase your understanding of the material. The better you understand, the better you can properly cite and contribute your own perspective, and therefore promoting a higher standard of academic honesty. Furthermore, by design, it mitigates against the generative AI hallucination problem by only using the sources and notes you provide.
It might be helpful to think of it more as a powerful autocomplete for the paper you are already working on, from your set of sources and notes as context, that just does the "write up" of your rough draft rather than a full on outsourced "draft writing service". The advantage is that it does this writeup in minutes (not hours) and it tries to be polished and coherent instead of rough.
Generally, the desired outcome of writing courses is for us to learn the material as best as we can and be able to articulate ourselves clearly. To understand the course material enough to form relations between various concepts, and then synthesize those relationships and apply them to topics. If we are doing constructive, critical, and analytical reading and composing of source material related to the content of the course, then we honestly believe that your professor would be delighted with the effort you are putting into the course.
However, submitting a draft as a final paper is never good and will be graded as such. There is a significant difference between a draft paper and a final paper. The higher composition and analysis skills are what is important to learn about and practice. The purpose of AI Source Writer is not to have a copy/paste assignment completed, but to help you beat procrastination, spend your time on more critical and productive aspects of writing, and have fun using the latest powerful tools to increase your capability to understand, compose, and express your individual critical thoughts.
Absolutely. We are open to discussions with educators on improving the quality of education through AI. Our goal is to complement traditional educational methods, providing students with the tools to tackle more complex writing tasks and engage deeply with interesting content instead of getting bogged down and bored with the basics. We believe that more exposure to the fundamentals of academic writing using capability enhancing tools will aid retention and skill development. If you would like to have a conversation about how you could use this tool in your instruction, you can reach out to us directly by registering for an account with your email and contacting support.
The point of Source Writer is not to "fly under the radar" using AI for your paper. Any attempt to "worsen the quality" to try to match student level writing totally defeats the purpose of learning how to write better. We believe the more exposure to better quality writing, especially with examples related to your interests, is the best way to learn. The more exposure you have, the more you can reference and recreate from. The purpose of college writing is to develop our capabilies to read, write, compose ideas, and express our viewpoints. Trying to dampen that to "cheat" is not the point at all. Instead, go after hard stuff, read more, talk with you professor and really grow and understand.
